Sample board committees questions

Committees carry much of the board’s detailed work. This template helps the board assess whether each committee has the right mandate, membership and reporting, and whether its work strengthens rather than duplicates the full board’s oversight.

These questions are a sample of the BoardOutlook board committees diagnostic. The complete diagnostic is intended to be used on the BoardOutlook platform.

  • Each committee has a clear mandate that is understood by the whole board.
  • Committee membership and chairing are appropriate and effective.
  • Committees report to the board in a way that supports good decisions.
  • The committee structure covers the organisation’s needs without duplication.
  • Committees have enough time and information to fulfil their remit.
Why it matters

Why committee effectiveness matters

Committees allow the board to go deep where it matters, on audit, risk, remuneration and more. But unclear mandates or weak reporting lines can leave gaps in oversight or duplicate effort.

Evaluating committees ensures each one earns its place, has the right people and mandate, and feeds the full board with the assurance it needs.
