Software Engineer

Mid-Level · AI-Augmented, Product-Minded

Melbourne / Hybrid · Full-time · ESOP

BoardOutlook was founded in 2019 on the belief that software can help more boards become great boards: for directors, shareholders, employees and society. We've worked with hundreds of boards and thousands of directors, and we're convinced every organisation we work with is better off for using the platform.

We're hiring a Software Engineer who cares about the user as well as the code, uses AI coding agents every day, and wants to grow into owning bigger problems over time.

Why this role is different

Most engineer roles hand you a ticket and a spec to follow. Here you'll get a problem and the support to work out a good solution, using AI agents to move faster than writing every line by hand.

The engineers we want in 2026 use AI agents to handle the volume while they focus on getting the work right: sensible decisions, quality, and what the user actually needs. We're looking for someone already working this way, or keen to learn fast.

This is a role with room to grow. You'll ship real features with a mentor and senior engineers alongside you, and take on more ownership as you find your feet. Tiers here are about capability, not years: you step up the moment you're operating at the next level.

Why join BoardOutlook?

A purpose-driven mission. Our mission is to make boards and executive teams better, now and into the future. An effective board is critical to an organisation's success, which means better outcomes for all stakeholders and society.

A team of seasoned leaders. You'll join a team of ~20 people across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, with experience in Australian unicorns, tier-one professional services, and boardrooms. You'll learn from and ship alongside some of the sharpest people in the country.

Five values that drive how we work:

  • Simplicity: We prioritise simplicity and reduce complexity.
  • Attention to detail: Details matter, and we take pride in getting them right.
  • Urgency: We commit and execute with urgency, ensuring swift action.
  • Generous investment: We invest generously in each other’s growth and success.
  • Optimism and ambition: We pursue ambitious goals and strive for outsized wins.

Ambitious growth plan. We have set ambitious targets and are well positioned to pursue rapid global and product expansion. We are already working with clients in the UK, Middle East, APAC, North America, South America and Europe. Joining us now means making an impact at a critical stage of growth, where your contributions will have direct influence on our trajectory.

About this role

You'll work closely with the engineering team to build a fast-growing enterprise platform, with direct access to product and the people who use what you build. You won't be handed fully-scoped tickets to follow to the letter. We want someone who takes a scoped problem, works out a sensible approach with input from the team, and ships it using AI agents day to day. Over time you'll grow toward owning features end-to-end, including what happens after they deploy.

What you'll do

  • Ship features with support. You build and deliver scoped features, with a mentor and senior engineers reviewing your work and widening your ownership over time.
  • Use AI agents every day. You work with Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor to draft, scaffold, refactor, test, and document, so your attention goes to getting the work right.
  • Think about the user, not just the code. You ask "what problem does this solve?" before "how should I build this?"
  • Make the everyday calls, ask on the big ones. You decide the implementation-level questions yourself and bring the bigger trade-offs to your mentor or the team.
  • Hold the quality bar. Quality doesn't flex with seniority here. You sweat the details, refuse "works but..." on your own work, and won't ship code or an interface you wouldn't put in front of a client.
  • Take part and share. You join in code reviews, improve our shared context when you spot a pattern, and share what you learn.

What "AI-augmented" actually means here

This is how we work day to day. We expect you to:

  • Use AI coding agents daily as your default working mode, not as an occasional assist.
  • Direct one or two agents reliably through a feature build, with clear prompting.
  • Read AI output critically. You know its common failure modes, reject plausible-but-wrong, and don't ship what you can't stand behind.
  • Help build the team's shared practices around AI-assisted development.
  • Stay current as the tools change. This landscape moves fast and we expect you to move with it.

The tech stack

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript/jQuery, Razor
  • Backend: .NET 8, C#
  • Databases: SQL Server, Redis
  • Cloud: Azure
  • Deployment: Azure & Bitbucket Pipelines
  • AI tooling: Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor

About you

You'll thrive in this role if you:

  • Have a product mindset. You think about users and outcomes, not just implementation.
  • Are confident with AI agents. You've integrated them into your workflow and you're getting meaningfully more done because of it.
  • Ship with urgency. You bias toward action. You'd rather ship and iterate than plan endlessly.
  • Communicate clearly. You explain technical decisions to non-technical people and you write well.
  • Work well with the team. You ask when you're stuck, share what you learn, and disagree straight, in the meeting rather than the corridor. You take feedback as readily as you give it.
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity. The brief is often "here's the problem, propose the best solution."
  • Take ownership. You see what needs doing and you do it.
  • Care about craft. Our clients are boards and consultants who notice polish, and we don't compromise on quality at any level. You hold the bar on UX, design, and code, and refuse "works but..." on your own work.
  • Learn continuously. You treat every review, AI mistake, and new tool as a chance to get sharper. This matters most at mid-level: we hire for trajectory.
  • Are curious about the domain. You ask what users actually do, not just what the system should do. You care about boards, governance, and the consultants who use the platform.
  • Are honest about what you don't know. You use AI agents critically, you can name what they get wrong, and you flag uncertainty early rather than bluffing.

We weight how you work with people as heavily as what you ship. The five values above are how we work day to day, and we interview hard for them.

This role suits you if you like being handed a problem rather than a rigid spec, you're already building with AI agents every day, and you want to grow into owning bigger pieces of work. It's likely not the right fit if you'd rather be told exactly what to build at every step.

Compensation

Total cash: $120,000 to $140,000 + Super.

Equity: You'll receive a generous ESOP (share option) grant with meaningful financial participation in BoardOutlook's growth. Every employee is a shareholder.

Hiring process

Our process tests three things:

  1. Your capability, through a short practical test.
  2. Your approach and drivers, through interviews and reference checks.
  3. Your cultural fit, assessed against our documented values through interviews and references.

Expect three interviews plus a practical test. We respect your time, and you'll get rapid decisions after each stage, typically in days, not weeks.
